GM - Buick - 2004 Terraza™ and LaCrosse™ Promotion

Buick led the way back in 2000 as the first company to use virtual reality as a promotional tool. The highly successful “Drive With Confidence” tour thrilled audiences and was responsible for direct automobile sales. Now, Buick again leads the way as the first to employ the newest and most exciting virtual reality delivery system ever created -- VirTra Systems' patented Immersa-Dome™.

Working with Buick's event marketing agency, Momentum Detroit, VirTra Systems created a mobile promotional experience for Buick's new Terraza™ and LaCrosse™ vehicles. Four Immersa-Dome units were installed into two of Buick's event-marketing trailers.

The Immersa-Dome is a key component for future virtual reality promotions, due to its ability to deliver a variety of configurations and content in an exciting and memorable manner. Fortune 500 Companies will benefit from the Immersa-Dome's powerful messaging capabilities, and its ability for larger and easier throughput than previous headset technologies.

U.S. Army

The U.S. Army Recruiting Command chose VirTra Systems to develop a virtual reality recruiting promotion. The systems were installed inside the U.S. Army's aviation promotional trailer that travels to college campuses, schools, and major events across the U.S. to assist in the Army's ongoing recruitment efforts.

Designed as a high-throughput recruiting tool, the Army's virtual reality experience places the viewer “inside” an Army Black Hawk helicopter performing an exciting mission. Participants rescue a downed pilot in this Black Hawk situation, and feel the helicopter vibrate beneath them while smelling the oil and machinery of a helicopter.

To create the “mission,” VirTra mounted a 360-degree camera system to the nose of an Army helicopter as it performed its maneuvers. The experience includes real-life 360-degree digital film, spherical head-tracking, vibration, stereo sound, and time-triggered wind and smell simulation. This is the first commercial use of 360-degree film within a spherical virtual reality experience combining these elements.

“This new recruiting tool effectively supports the Army's efforts to reach our target market,” commented Lieutenant Colonel J. L. Davidson, commander of the Army Mission Support Battalion. “We -- and our visitors -- are impressed with this new promotional system, and we are pleased to have selected VirTra Systems to develop it for the Army.”

Pennzoil - VROOOM

VirTra Systems delivered the largest-ever mobile, 360° immersive virtual reality™ promotion to Pennzoil.

Integrated within two customized and separately touring trailers (two gooseneck trailers with 13 seats in each), visitors take an eight-minute journey inside the workings of an automobile engine with famous talk-show host, Jay Leno. The experience concludes with the user in the seat of Pennzoil's world champion Indy car rocketing around the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. To capture the true essence of the experience, VirTra Systems digitally captured the experience at the Las Vegas Speedway to give the user the real sensation of driving at speeds of nearly 200 miles per hour! The Pennzoil promotion utilizes 26 customized virtual reality units featuring VirTra Systems' patented technology, representing the most technically-advanced virtual reality headset promotional project ever. Recent advancements in VirTra Systems' production and 360-degree digital imagery have yielded yet another milestone in video and graphics resolution and clarity.

“It has been a pleasure working with VirTra Systems and their dedication to push the envelope of technology, creativity, and marketing”, stated Chris Hayek, brand manager of Pennzoil. “After you put on the headset, feel your whole body rumble with the experience, hear 3-D audio effects, and feel wind as you travel forward--you won't soon forget this experience!”

“Our original concept was to take an astounding journey through a 360-degree engine and drive a virtual Pennzoil Indy car, but we weren't initially sure this was possible,” stated Jamison Braun, partner and creative director at Thunderbolt Marketing. “When we began looking for someone who could pull this off, VirTra Systems became the logical choice. They had experience, could handle both the software and hardware design, and were 'on the edge' with some new innovations that we've been able to incorporate into this program.”

GM-Buick – Drive with Confidence Tour™

Buick approached VirTra Systems with the LeSabre “Drive with Confidence Tour” concept and asked for technology to achieve an objective that never existed. Working at a feverish pace in 2000, VirTra Systems' engineers developed and harnessed technologies from four different industries to come up with a way to interact with pro-golfer Ben Crenshaw while the user chauffeurs him from New York City to the California's PGA West golf course.

VirTra Systems adapted the virtual reality systems to utilize real leather Buick LeSabre driver seats for the 360-degree virtual test drive. The experience also was developed to include various scents that would emit at precise moments within the experience. Two virtual reality promotional 18-wheel trailers were built with eight virtual reality stations in each and were scheduled to travel for one year to major golf events and attractions.

During ten months of the tour, 1,200 LeSabre sales were traced to this promotion, and 146 were sold from one single event! The tour was a tremendous success and ran for two additional years beyond its original intent.

Due to the system's advanced architecture, VirTra Systems can easily update content without a complete overhaul. As a result of changes in Buick's spokesperson contracts for the subsequent year, VirTra Systems was able to remove Ben Crenshaw's video image and replace it with PGA golfer J.J. Henry without completely re-shooting the entire experience.

Red Baron™ Pizza

Red Baron™ Pizza, a subsidiary of Schwan's, has an aerial stunt team that travel to air shows in North America to promote Red Baron™ Pizza. Red Baron requested VirTra Systems to create a unique 360-degree virtual experience to place air show spectators onboard a Red Baron vintage Stearman biplane while performing its exciting stunt routine.

VirTra Systems mounted its proprietary 360-degree digital camera apparatus within the cockpit to capture the vantage point as the biplane performed its aerial maneuvers.

Users sit inside the virtual cockpit, don a headset, and freely view a 360-degree experience as the vintage biplane makes its loops, snap rolls, and other stimulating stunts.

Red Baron™ installed three seats within its mobile attraction that travels to air shows throughout North America. The final product was an enormous success. Red Baron expanded its mobile tour through 2003. In late 2003, VirTra Systems was then commissioned to upgrade the systems with a spherical 360-degree reshoot utilizing new camera technology, and the upgraded systems are still touring today.

For a large mobile set-up in 2003, VirTra was asked to produce a 50-seat mobile 3-D theater. The experience was a wild 3-D adventure ride with the Red Baron aerial stunt team through waterfalls, tornadoes, volcanoes and canyons. VirTra combined the 3-D visual effects with digital sound, wind, fog, and lightning (lasers) for a truly memorable experience. Schedule - click here

Chevrolet - Olympic Torch City Celebration Tour™

For the 2002 Olympic Games, Chevrolet was in need of a unique mobile attraction to be part of the Olympic Torch Relay as it made its trek across the United States toward Salt Lake City, Utah. VirTra Systems was chosen to develop an immersive experience for this special event. VirTra developed a real-life, 360-degree immersive virtual reality experience that incorporated sight, sound, smell and wind. This unique experience was produced by placing VirTra Systems' proprietary 360-degree camera system on a world class ski jumper, and then digitizing the content. The result was a user feeling the sensation of actually making the 120K jump.

Due to the magic of VirTra Systems' technology, a user could even look backwards while making the jump - a feat far too dangerous to do in real life - but very possible within a 360-degree virtual world. Various smells such as fresh air, piney woods, and even a slice of orange, were introduced at the appropriate times within this multi-sensory experience.

More than 413,000 spectators attended Chevrolet-branded Olympic events in 117 different cities during 2001 and 2002, and generated more than 2 billion impressions. Awareness for Chevrolet's sponsorship of the Salt Lake City Games spiked 600%, and 61% of participating dealers saw an increase in showroom traffic. It was a full mobile tour, with 43 different cars and trucks used simultaneously over the 65-day, 14,000-mile, 46-state endeavor.

“We wanted to do something special for the public,” commented Mary O'Connor, Chevrolet's promotion manager. “If you do something to enrich lives of the consumer, you'll succeed.”

At each stop, huge parties were staged with concerts, games, and activities for local citizens. Attendees flocked to the 18-wheel double-expandable Chevy Torch Relay mobile rig. Inside were a string of interactives including the virtual reality ski jumps (with wind and aromatic sensations). A total of six virtual reality units traveled from city to city on its journey to Salt Lake City. The VR 120K Ski Jump was so successful that it became an attraction at the Olympic Village Ski Lodge in Park City, Utah for months following the nationwide tour.

“I don't think anyone had an idea of what the impact of this program would be.” - Mary O'Conner, Chevrolet.

Sports Illustrated for Kids - Be the Ball & Jump Zone

When Sports Illustrated for Kids came to VirTra Systems with concerns about the durability of a traveling experience to tour the country, our engineers designed two unique interactive platforms that have survived the harsh treatment from young kids and performed flawlessly for the sports client. Once again, with SI for Kids extending the tour into 2001, VirTra Systems utilized its expertise in the system's design to simply modify and upgrade each unit's experiences.

Pepsi-Cola

VirTra Systems also designed and manufactured interactive virtual reality game systems for Pepsi-Cola to promote its Mountain Dew product. The systems incorporated a 30-second Mountain Dew commercial at the beginning of the experience before allowing the user to play one of two games, one of which was a race car driving game, and the other a snow boarding game. VirTra Systems performed all work on the virtual reality equipment including consulting with the client's needs, and in the end, exceeded the expectations of Pepsi-Cola.
